How do I know if I have ADHD?
ADHD (Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) can look different for everyone—and often shows up in ways people don’t expect, especially in adults.
You might consider exploring ADHD if you notice:
Difficulty focusing, staying organized, or finishing tasks
Frequently feeling overwhelmed by daily responsibilities
Procrastination, even on important or meaningful tasks
Forgetfulness or losing track of things often
Restlessness, racing thoughts, or difficulty relaxing
Challenges with time management (e.g., running late, underestimating time)
Emotional sensitivity, irritability, or low frustration tolerance
A pattern of starting strong but struggling with follow-through
For many adults, ADHD isn’t about a lack of effort—it’s about how the brain regulates attention, motivation, and executive functioning. It’s also common for ADHD to overlap with anxiety, depression, or burnout, which can make it harder to recognize.
How do I get diagnosed with ADHD?
A formal ADHD diagnosis is made by a qualified healthcare professional such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, or physician. Please note that this does not include clinical counsellors (like those at our clinic.)
The assessment process typically includes:
A detailed clinical interview exploring your current concerns and history
Review of childhood patterns (since ADHD begins in early development)
Standardized questionnaires or rating scales
Screening for other factors such as anxiety, depression, trauma, or sleep issues
In some cases, collateral information (e.g., report cards, family input) may be helpful, but this isn’t always required—especially for adult assessments.
We’re happy to provide referrals to trusted organizations that can support you further.
Do I require a ADHD formal diagnosis to get support?
Not necessarily.
While some people choose to pursue a formal ADHD diagnosis, others don’t—and both paths are valid. The right approach depends on your goals, needs, and personal preferences.
A formal diagnosis may be helpful if you:
Are considering medication and need an assessment from a physician or psychiatrist
Require documentation for school, workplace, or academic accommodations
Want clarity and confirmation of your experiences
At the same time, many people seek support without a diagnosis. You might still benefit from counselling if you:
Struggle with focus, organization, or follow-through
Feel overwhelmed, burnt out, or mentally scattered
Notice patterns that align with ADHD but aren’t ready (or able) to pursue assessment
Want practical tools and strategies to improve daily functioning
In therapy, we focus on your lived experience—not just a label. Whether or not you have a formal diagnosis, we can work on building skills, increasing self-understanding, and reducing the impact these challenges have on your life.
If you’re unsure, we can also help you explore whether pursuing a diagnosis would be helpful for you and guide you through next steps.
ADHD Counselling: How We Can Support You
ADHD counselling is not simply about symptom management—it is about developing a deeper understanding of how you think, process, and move through the world, and creating systems that support you in a sustainable way.
Many individuals with ADHD have internalized years of frustration, self-doubt, or the sense that they are constantly falling short. Our work together aims to shift that narrative—toward clarity, self-trust, and meaningful, practical change.
Our approach to ADHD counselling is both strategic and compassionate. We focus on:
Personalized systems and structure: Developing realistic approaches to organization, time management, and follow-through that align with your natural rhythms and demands of daily life
Emotional regulation and resilience: Strengthening your ability to navigate overwhelm, manage reactivity, and respond to challenges with greater steadiness
Reframing self-perception: Addressing patterns of shame and self-criticism, and cultivating a more accurate and compassionate understanding of your strengths and challenges
Motivation, focus, and burnout: Gaining insight into patterns such as procrastination, avoidance, and hyperfocus—and learning how to work with them more effectively
Relational and communication dynamics: Exploring how ADHD shows up in relationships and building skills that support clearer, more connected communication
Sustainable routines and integration: Creating structure that is supportive without being rigid—allowing for consistency, flexibility, and long-term success
Our work is collaborative, nuanced, and tailored to you. There is no one-size-fits-all approach to ADHD, and we prioritize strategies that are both effective and sustainable within the context of your life.
Whether you are newly exploring ADHD or have lived with these patterns for years, counselling can offer a grounded, supportive space to better understand yourself and move forward with greater confidence and intention.
